Sevasti Diakos
Awarded Scholarship
The Pan-Coan Society
“Hippocrates”, Syllogos Kefalou
“Isodia Tis Theotokou” and Kardamena Town
Society presented Sevasti Sable Diakos
of St. John’s University Modern Greek Language and Literature program with a
four thousand dollar scholarship in January’ 2009. On Wednesday, May 28th,
the three organizations pledged to continue this scholarship for Ms. Diakos.
“I can not believe the generosity,”
said Sevasti. “The town of Kardamena raised
$1800 for a scholarship. They asked the Syllogos Kefalos to match it. They not only voted to match it but to
bring it up to the round number of a $4,000 scholarship. I can not thank them
enough. My parents are in shock. I am still in shock!” Mr. John Sakellis of the Pan-Coan Society
Hippocrates and Mr. Manolis Stamatis
and Antonios Drossos of the
Syllogos Kefalou “Isodia Tis Theotokou”
were the leaders who inspired their members to create this unprecedented
scholarship. Other members of the 2009 Board of the Pan-Coan
Society “Hippocrates” include: Zaharias Fessaras,
Vice-president; Magdalini Kambouris,
Treasurer; Michael Mavroudis, Secretary; Board
Members John Mavlios, John Gasparis,
Stathis Gasparis, Elias Stelletos and Vassilios Diakos. Their youth are graduating universities such Maria Stamatis of the SJU School of Pharmacy. Others are having weddings such as the Sakellis’ family. They are continuing the legendary ancient
success of Kos Island
in their unique way in New York City.
They are proud to be part of the Dodecanese Federation of Societies of New
York.
Plato said “Good actions give
strength to ourselves and inspire good actions in others.” In this time of
economic distress, a human interest story of a daughter of Greek immigrants
from a Dodecanese island inspires all of the generosity of middle class America.
Regional and ethnic societies will reach out to help American youth attempting
to acquire a university education.
