(JOSEPH MARC SPORTS)
Initial Report

My first two weeks at Joseph Marc Sports have been great. I get a great range of the television field. My duties include those of a production assistant, which gives me a feeI for everything. I'm not restricted to just one job. It is my duty to arrange the equipment, bring it to the set, and set it up for the show. While I set up for the show, I get a better understanding of lighting for a big remote, shot framing, and exactly how to conduct an interview.

The producers are very down to earth, and don't take advantage of me what so ever. They give me the freedom to do what I want and are never hesitant to answer my questions. It's a great time every time we go on a shoot. I get to go to different places and meet different people.

Some of the people that I have met include: Coach Mike Jarvis, Coach Lou Carneseca, Mike Crispino from MSG, Bill Wenington, as well as been in the presence of rapper Jay-Z, and Ex President Bill Clinton. This is everything I thought it would be plus more.

Thursday's are the day's in which we shoot the on air's. Mike Crispino comes in and we shoot in the men's locker room. It is the responsibility of myself and the other intern to set up the equipment and the set. The equipment that we have to set up includes: the lighting kit, the beta camera, and the microphones.

The producers get the jersey's for the background and they set up all the interviews. Sometimes, if the camera man can't make it, I get the call to do the camera work.

Camera work is really fun and challenging. I learn a lot about shot framing and focusing. Framing is very important for this type of show. Interviews are what make the show happen. They give the show depth and life. It also helps to get your point across. For example, a reoccurring segment on the show is the spotlight. Every week there is a different spotlight on a different player. We interview the player and anyone we can get a hold of that would be interested in commenting on that particular player. The audience gets a broad range of views on the player as well as hears from the player himself.

During the shoots, the producers and the camera man do what they can to teach me whatever it is I am questioning. Lighting is another big part of the show. We are presenting St. John's to the viewing audience, and if the coach or the players look bad, it looks bad on us and the University. We also interview St. John's staff. We did a segment on the Sports Medicine Team, and the Sports Information Department, both segments featured me as the camera man. It gave me a great sense of satisfaction to see my work on broadcast television.

The direction of television I would like to take in my life is towards editing. With Joseph Marc, I get to sit in on all the editing sessions I want. The producers are very easy to talk to and very understanding. They take time out of their busy schedule to answer any questions about editing that I may have, they even give me pointers with out me asking. But my most exciting moment at Joseph Marc Sports was when I was given the chance to actually edit a piece for the show. I edit all the time for WRED TV, but for some reason this time was totally different. It must have been because this was going to be seen on national television, or maybe because I finally had an opportunity to show off my skills to professionals in the business. Whatever the case is, it was exciting. It gave me such a feeling of accomplishment, and I was told that the segment in which I edited, would be my segment for the duration of the show. There are three more shows for the Redstorm Report, after those are done, its off to work on Yankees Magazine. I have done work for this show already, but when in season, I will be doing a lot more.

So far this experience has been both challenging and exhilarating. The rest of the way looks just as exciting, if not, even more exciting. Some things to come are: a trip to Jason Williams' house for an interview, a behind the scenes look at what Senior Reggie Jessie does before a game, as well as trips to Yankee Stadium. I can't wait to experience everything and to continue editing for the show.
