Black Entertainment Television is the first African-American owned cable television station in the world. Founded in 1979 by Robert Johnson, it is now a subsidiary of Viacom, Inc. and consists not only cable broadcasting, but the BET website as well at http://www.bet.com .
With its corporate offices in Washington, DC, BET has offices in California, Chicago and, of course, New York. BET provides quality programming targeted toward the African-American population, currently reaching 100 million households nationwide. Focused primarily on music entertainment, the network format also blends stand-up comedy, sports, talk shows and public affairs programming.
Interns must agree to 37.5 hour workweek making this internship more suitable for most students during the summer time. In other words, BET requires 4 days a week. We have had several students who have done this during the regular semester as well. They might be flexible.
Internships in the New York Market:
Fashion Department - Interns are responsible for viewing videotapes to ensure current wardrobe credits are correct. Attend weekly meetings with wardrobe staff. Assist in preparing wardrobes for upcoming shows. Perform associated administrative duties
News and Public Affairs Department - Interns are responsible for reading newswires,monitoring internet news sources, clipping and filing newspaper articles, locating file videotape, researching news stories, setting up interviews, accompanying news crews to press conferences, writing news copy, pulling soundbites and editing news packages.
