In August, 1999, I went to Nova Scotia for a two week vacation. Leaving Long Island, by car, I first stopped at the Univ. of Maine, in Orono, to see Steve and Chris Whittington's exhibits at the Hudson Art Museum that Steve directs. After visiting the Pre-Columbian Art at the Hudson, I went to spend a week on Grand Manan Island. It is next to Campobello Island and is a real joy. I stayed in the Marathon Inn, a Victorian house on a hill, built about 1840. I spent an entire day on a private boat circumnavigating the Island during which I saw scores of grey seals, basking on the rocks. I then went to Tatamagouche, where I stayed in a converted Railroad Station, in the stationmaster's bedroom. This gave me time to see the famous tidal bore of the Bay of Fundy and to tour the nature sights in Northwestern Nova Scotia. I then went to Baddeck and stayed for a week in Alexander Graham Bell's house, which is now the Telegraph House Inn. This gave me plenty of time to go around the justly famous Cape Breton National Park. I saw some of the greatest scenery this side of Banff. And many animals--Moose, Bald eagles, foxes, etc. I went on a whale watching trip out of the northernmost tip of Cape Breton and saw over forty pilot whales and two ocean sunfish. I visited the working coal mine in Syndney, NS, and found it very interesting. On the return trip, I stayed for a night in the lovely little town of St. Andrews by the Sea at the southeasternmost corner of New Brunswick. There I purchased several pieces of fine art - two ceramic bowls and a beautiful harbor seal, carved from driftwood. Click here to return to my travels in Latin America & Europe: |
