“The Greek-American Homeowners Association is attempting to perpetuate the Hellenic language and culture through symbolic scholarships,” said President George Alexiou at the Wednesday, January 7th Vasilopita (New Year Bread) social at their center at 23-49 31 St., Astoria. “You are outstanding students. Your values of good citizenship exemplify the Vincentian philosophical training given to you at St. John’s University. You are our future: the 2004 carriers of the Olympic ideal. I am personally giving you a copy of ‘the Olympic Games’. The Greek-American Homeowners Association is attempting to foster an understanding of the unique honor Greece has in hosting the 2004 Olympic Games. We wish you success on all your future projects.”
Five thousand dollars in scholarships for excellence in Modern Greek language and culture were awarded by the Greek-American Homeowners Association and Mr. George Fakiris in memory of his father. The scholarship winners are Sister Sarah Fitzpatrick, Popi Groutas, Steve Kifotidis, Constantina Lambrou, Achilles Livanis, Andrew Lyons, Thomas Moore, Theodora Pantelatos, Sophia Spyris and Zoi Zaharopoulos. Dr. Nicholas Toscano is chairman of the Languages and Literature Department of St.John’s University. Prof. Catherine Tsounis is the adjunct instructor of the Modern Greek Language and Literature program.
Over 125 persons attended with standing room only. Prominent persons who attended included: Father Nicholas Kouvaris and Presvitera Kouvaris of Holy Cross Church, Whitestone; City Councilman and Chairman of the Public Safety Committee Peter Vallone Jr.; representatives from Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, State Senator George Onorato, and Assemblyman Mike Giannaris: Apostolos Zoumpaniotis; Elias Neofytidis; Despina Kilimantzoglou, Demetrios Tsakas and others.
Participants and donors of the November 27th Thanksgiving Dinner for the community were honored with citations from Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney. Assemblyman Mike Giannaris honored Mr. George Fakiris for community service. “ The entire western Queens community thanks you for your community work.’ said Assemblyman Giannaris in a proclamation.
“The Greek-American Homeowner’s Association meeting is important to me,” said City Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. “We are honoring persons who make a difference in the fabric of the community’s life. Everyone present in this room makes Astoria the best in the country.”
