and Information
03/18/99:
I gave the page a complete makeover today, with better format, layout,
graphics, etc. I think it's a bit more fresh and modern than before.
Hope you like the new look. Also, I will be creating a separate section
for Japanese links very soon, so stay tuned.
03/15/99:
Added a large listing of links to Filipino culture.
These were compiled by Ron Buenaventura and Racquel Rendon who are school
psycholgy graduate students at SDSU.
They represent a wide variety of links related to the Filipino experience
as well as the history of the Phillipines. Some of these links were
used in a course to advance other students learning through some of the
online techniques described in here. Thanks to Ron and Racquel for
the info.
03/13/99:
If you're looking for a great site on The African Experience, go check
out Black Quest.
There you will find an incredible listing of resources and Power Links,
including a business directory, media interest, historical links, etc.
It is a wonderful site for K-12 exploration as well. It's listed
in the African-American section below. You
won't be disappointed.
03/01/99:
Added a fine web site to the African-American section
called Black Voices. Black Voices'
website regular features include Interactive Voices where lovers of Afro-centric
culture from all over the world gather for cyber chit chat. Black Voices
Business section features Job Smart, financial matters, stock market, Black
News Today -- which is updated daily with columns, stories, weather, archives.
The Learning Center, Black family today, self-health and fitness files.
In the entertainment section, there is music, films, arts ... for the Afro-centric
community world-wide. CHECK IT OUT!!!!
Introduction
to OCLL
In today's
diverse schools, cultural and lingusitic competence is critical to successful
intervention attempts. While development of such competence is often expensive
and time consuming, current comunication technology offers a viable alternative.
Online Culture and Language Learning (OCLL) is a phrase I developed that
refers to the practice of using a variety of simply Internet-based tools
to facilitate development of cross-cultural and bilingual comptency via
computer. By learning to use these technologies, educators can develop
skills that lead directly to successful and effective interventions with
diverse populations.
Rationale
for OCLL
The mandate
regarding the delivery of services to culturally and linguistically diverse
children in today's schools is clear--cultural competency is a must. The
advent of the various communication technologies developed and used on
the Internet today proide a unique and unprecedented opportunity to develop
these much needed skills in a manner never available before. Through the
use of a wide variety of Internet based resources (e.g., newsgroup postings
[in various languages and from various cultures and countries], interactive
and informative web pages and links [e.g., online language tutorials and
culturgrams], or real time voice or text chat [e.g., with people from other
cultures and countries and in other languages]), the process of acquiring
culture or language based skills can prove to be much more efficient and
cost effective than ever before.
History
of OCLL
The development
of Online Culture and Language Learning arose out of my attempts to bridge
technology with instruction in the development of multicultural, cross-cultural,
bilingual, and bi-cultural competency within the SDSU
School Psychology Program. Although our program has had funding in
the past to provide cultural immersions and cultural plunges, it has been
my experience that once an individual is removed from the immersion experience
that there is little in the everyday environment that continus to reinforce
or support the competencies that were developed. Given the expense in both
time and money necessary to engage in such immerison experiences, it seemed
that some avenue needed to be in place that would allow students to continue
with such cultural and linguistic contact in order to maintain the skills
they developed earlier. Online Culture and Language Learning provides just
such a tool in that it allows individuals to augment and refine many of
the very same skills that are used during en vivo cultural or linguistic
experiences. If education professionals are willing to embrace the emerging
technologies, then it would not be an exaggeration to say that the promise
of cultural or linguistic competence has now been placed no further than
the nearest computer.
Getting
Started with OCLL
In order
to take advantage of what the Internet has to offer, you need to have some
basic hardware and software. In general, here is what you need:
Basic
Mac System Requirements:
-
Power
PC
-
32 Mb
RAM minimum (64 Mb recommended)
-
System
8.0 or higher
-
Built-in
or external Microphone (Apple Plain Talk - recommended for 16-bit audio
and Power PC's)
-
FreePPP
2.5 (third party) or Mac PPP (built into the system) for telephone dial-up
connection
-
Mac TCP
or Open Transport (built into the system) for direct Internet connection
(Appletalk, Ethernet, etc.)
-
33.6kbps
Modem (56kbps recommended) for use with PPP (phone dial-up)
-
Quicktime
v2.0 or later
-
Soundmanager
v3.1 or later
Basic
PC System Requirements:
-
Pentium
-
16mb RAM
minimum (32 Mb recommended for Win95/98 or 64mb for WinNT)
-
Windows
95/98, or Windows NT operating system
-
Sound
Card w/ external speakers (or built in sound card and speaker)
-
External
Microphone (or built-in internal)
-
Dialup
Networking and Remote Access Services (built into Windows 95/98/NT)
-
33.6kbps
Modem (56kpbs recommended) or direct connection (Ethernet, etc.)
Optional
Software Requirements (Mac and PC):
Unless
you intend to use the email and news programs that are built in or bundled
with your Web browser (e.g., Netscape or Internet Explorer), you will need
to get independent email and newsreader programs. These programs provide
significantly more functionality and features than the programs built into
web browsers and there is quite a variety. Try one or all until you find
one that suits your tastes. Go to any of the sites listed in the Software
Sources - Miscellaneous section to find locations for such programs
(Mac or PC).
If
you need help configuring your Windows 95/98/NT system to use dial up networking,
remote access, or TCP/IP network protocol, you can follow these links for
detailed instructions and information on how to get things set up properly.
For Windows 95/98 you can go to Frank
Condron's PPP Connection Using Windows 95 page. For Windows NT go to
Frank's Windows
NT Dial-up Networking page. Windows 95/98/NT users have the option
of using an external program such as Trumpet Winsock, instead of the built
in system for establishing remote TCP/IP (Internet) connections. If you're
still using Windows 3.1 you should upgrade to Win 95/98/NT or you will
HAVE to use an external program for connecting vit TCP/IP because this
feature is NOT built into that operating system.
