LISTSERVS
Listserv's are a great way to get involved in discussions concerning current events in a wide variety of fields. NASP has several listservs that are terriffic places for anyone to read about, solicit, and provide information on just about any important topic found in school psychology. Listserv's consist basically of email that is sent directly and continously to you some time after messages are posted. In this sense, the discussion comes to you, as opposed to my Boardroom where you go to the discussion. Beware, however, that you can receive a great deal of email traffic from some listservs and that you might get a lot of email on topics in which you have little or no interest. The Boardroom on the other hand doesn't crowd your "In" box and allows you to read only those posts that you are actually interested in. In any event, if you want to try the listserv experience, here's how to do it!
NASP Listserv: The is the basic listserv and the most popular one that NASP offers and you do NOT need to be a member of NASP in order to join. Most of the people who post are school psychologists in practice and it covers a broad array of threads (discussion topics) at any give time. To subscribe to the NASP Listserv, you need to follow a few simple steps. If you are somewhat familiar with listservs, you merely need to browse the instructions and then simply click on this link, NASP Listserv, and you'll be halfway to subscribing. Otherwise, carefully read and follow the instructions listed below. First, create a new email message and address the "To:" field to-
nasp-request@lists.ltsi.net
Make sure your email address appears in the "From:" field of your message (your email program usually does this automatically) and in the body of the message put only this word: "Subscribe" (no quotation marks). Leave the "Subject:" field blank. No other information is necessary and the server will send you confirmation of your successful subscription to the listserv. If for some reason the server doesn't accept your request or there's an error in your message, you'll get a return email telling you what happened but it won't necessarily tell you how to correct it. Bascially, your message should look something like this:
To:
nasp-request@lists.ltsi.net
From: your email address
goes here
Subject:
Subscribe
That should do it. Once you are on the listserve you'll get lots of mail. To post a message on the listserve, just send email to:
nasp@lists.ltsi.net
When you reply to other peoples' posts, you need to be careful. If you want your response to go to the listserve for everyone to read, you need to make sure the "To:" field reads nasp@lists.ltsi.net. Just hitting the "Reply" command in your email program doesn't guarantee that it will go to this address as sometimes the "From:" field contains the poster's own email address. Replying to such posts will send the message directly to the original poster and not to the listserve. Of course, if your intention is to send a private message to that individual, then you have no problem. But beware of the reverse. If you're trying to send a private message to the original poster, make sure that their personal email address is in the "To:" field of your message and that it doesn't read "nasp@lists.ltsi.net" otherwise the entire known world will see your message. There have been many embarrassing moments on listserves where people forgot to check the "To:" field and ended up doing something they really wished they hadn't!
NASP also offers a "digest" version of its popular general listserve which is handy if you don't want to get every single message sent to you directly. To Subscribe to the NASP-Digest Listserv, Send To: nasp-digest-request@lists.ltsi.net, Send This Message: Subscribe.
NASP has other listserv's as well that may be of interest to you. Here are the particulars for subscribing to them.
To Subscribe to the NASP-SPAN Listserv, Send To: nasp-span-request@lists.ltsi.net, Send This Message: Subscribe
To
UnSubscribe to any NASP listserv: Change the word "Subscribe" above
to "Unsubscribe" and send the message as usual to the appropriate
listserv address. If you would like to subscribe to the NASP-Leader or NASP-NL
listserv's, or if you just need some help, you can contact the listserv
moderator, Ron Benner
directly.
