Professor Kwon studied risk management and insurance at The College of Insurance (now the School of Risk Management (SRM) of St. John’s University) (MBA) and Georgia State University (Ph.D.). He is also a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and is listed in the Fulbright Senior Specialist Pool. Prior to joining the School of Risk Management in 2002, he gained experience as an educator with Georgia State University and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), as an insurance regulator with Monetary Authority of Singapore and as an industry specialist with the American Institute for CPCU/IIA.

Besides his full-time commitment as the Edwin A.G. Manton Endowed Chair Professorship in International Insurance and Risk Management at the SRM, he works for the Honors Committee of the International Insurance Society and the Center for the Study of Insurance Regulation. He visits overseas universities, including, in the recent past years, Hitotsubashi University, Waseda University and Meiji University (all three in Tokyo, Japan) and National Chengchi University (Taipei, Taiwan).

 

He has authored several books. Particularly, his co-authored (with Harold D. Skipper, Jr.), Kulp-Wright Award winning book – Risk Management and Insurance: Perspectives in a Global Economy by Wiley/Blackwell (New York, Boston & London) – has been used in 40 institutions in about 15 countries. He actively publishes papers in academic and professional journals, presents key research findings at various conferences and offers services to several academic journals (including, the Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance, Korean Insurance Journal, and formerly as editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Risk and Insurance). He has received three times the Research Excellence Award of the International Insurance Society and The Geneva Association, a record for a single author.

 

He helped to establish the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association (APRIA) in 1997 and create the World Risk and Insurance Economics Congress (WRIEC), a once-in-five year academic forum jointly organized by APRIA, ARIA, EGRIE and The Geneva Association. Professor Kwon organized WRIEC’s inaugural 2005 Salt Lake City meeting and the 2010 Singapore meeting.

 

He offers consulting and research services as well as custom-made symposia for C-suite and board members for institutions in the public and private sectors in the U.S. and abroad (including the OECD, the U.S. Congress, Waseda University, Singapore College of Insurance, the International Insurance Society and Networks Financial Institute). He specializes in insurance market and country analysis, insurer financial and operation analysis, and insurance regulation.
